CASA's new report
The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University has just released Wasting the Best and the Brightest: Substance Abuse at America’s Colleges and Universities, which reveals the serious nature of the problem of substance abuse at America’s colleges and universities and how it has intensified since 1993. It lays out the factors that drive student use and abuse as well as the damaging consequences.
The report summarizes what research shows can be done to prevent and reduce the problem, and describes the chasm between this knowledge and what schools, parents and communities are doing. Concrete recommendations are provided for college administrators and trustees, parents, alumni, students, policymakers, and the tobacco and alcohol industries.
